Gentle Dental Extractions

While our primary goal is always to preserve your natural teeth, there are times when an extraction is the best step for your overall oral health and comfort.

At Carolina Dental Center, Dr. Kevin Hojnowski performs extractions with a focus on "the highest level of gentle dental care," ensuring you feel respected and comfortable throughout the process.

When is an Extraction Necessary?

Dr. Hojnowski may recommend an extraction if a tooth is beyond the help of Restorative Dentistry or Root Canals. Common reasons include:

  • Severe Decay: When a tooth is too damaged to support a Same-Day Crown.

  • Advanced Gum Disease: If Gum Disease has caused significant bone loss, making the tooth unstable.

  • Preparation for Implants: Removing a failing tooth to make room for a permanent Dental Implant.

  • Overcrowding: To create space for proper alignment or specialized dental treatments.

An extraction is often just the first step in restoring your smile’s integrity.

Dr. Hojnowski’s advanced training in surgical procedures and Bone Grafting allows for a seamless transition from extraction to restoration.

  1. The Extraction: The tooth in question is carefully and gently removed.

  2. Bone Grafting (If Needed): If the jawbone is not dense enough to support a future replacement, bone material is added to create a stable foundation.

  3. Restoring Your Smile: To prevent surrounding teeth from shifting and to maintain your facial structure, we offer several replacement options:

    • Dental Implants: The gold standard for replacing a missing tooth from the root up.

    • Dental Bridges: A fixed solution to fill the gap left by a missing tooth.

    • Dentures: A reliable option for replacing multiple missing teeth.

The Extraction and Replacement Journey

What Dr. Hojnowski Says About Extracting a Tooth

"When a tooth is extracted, the socket that the tooth was housed in will shrink over time in both height and width as the healing process takes place.

Healing and remodeling of the bone can cause between 40-60% loss of bone volume within the first year alone.

This process can render a patient no longer a candidate for an implant.

It is important to place a bone graft in the socket at the time of extraction in order to preserve the height and width of the bone and socket, allowing for potential future replacement with an implant.

This not only gives the patient a replacement tooth, but prevents the loss of support for facial structures."

Dr. Hojnowski understands that the idea of an extraction can be stressful.

His comprehensive approach focuses on your long-term quality of life, ensuring that any "gap" in your smile is addressed to prevent bone deterioration and facial sagging.

With his Fellowship in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, you are in expert hands for both the removal and the eventual replacement of your tooth.
